Some details emerged this week of another ransomware attack on a school. This time the school was in Florida, and attackers were asking for $40 million, having made the school’s systems unavailable and threatened to releae personal student data. There were some interesting details released of the conversation between the impacted school and the hackers. It’s clear from this conversation that (a) the hackers cannot be reasoned with, and (b) do not even understand the nature of the organisation they’re attacking.
These types of attack are particularly insidious. Attackers are now targeting less secure organisations and institutions across the world. The security industry has a responsibilty to step up and help make security easier to implement, whether through education, processes or technology.
