This week saw another security breach related to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In a simple ‘attack’, a Swiss hacker called Till Kottman allegedly gained access to over 150,000 security cameras. They did this by getting hold of corporate super admin credentials for a company called Verkada. They were able to access video feeds from inside hospitals, police stations, and schools. In addition to the worrying breach of privacy, Verkada has suffered huge reputational damage, will likely be sued, and have hampered their own future strategy. The incident could easily have been prevented if a security review had picked up some of the simple failings.
